In this article we look at how to set a printable exam via ExamSimulator.
Why do we need to do this?
Setting a 'printable' exam via ExamSimulator allows students to have a more traditional exam experience, with them writing their answers on paper. Setting the exam via ExamSimulator will ensure the student is provided with detailed feedback, as the platform will automatically break down their marks by question, topic area and skill area, as well as syncing this data into the data dashboards for both the teacher and the student.
What comes before?
You must be a Teacher assigned to a group or a HoD or Admin on the site. You (or someone in your department) must have built at least one exam.
Setting a 'printable' exam
1. Login to your account and click on the 'Assignments/Exam' button at the top of your page.
2. Click on the 'Exams' tab.
3. Click on 'Set exam'.
4. Select the group or groups you are going to set the exam for. Remember that you will only be able to set the exam for groups you teach. If the exam needs to be set for groups you don't teach, the teacher for that group will need to set the exam for that group. Remember also that any teacher in your department will have access to exams that have been created within the department. Therefore, it will just be a matter of them clicking on 'set exam', finding the exam and completing the process for their group.
5. Select the course that the exam is written for. If the course drop-down is unavailable, this could be because:
-
The group are not assigned to a course (see 'Creating groups').
-
You have chosen more than one group with different courses.
- There are no ExamSimulator questions available for the course you have selected.
6. Click on 'Choose exam' and select the exam you want to set. If you have not previously built the exam, you can click on 'Build Exam' and then come back here to set it.
7. Choose whether you want to assign the exam to all students in the group(s) you have selected or if you only want to assign it to some students.
8. Choose the 'printable' exam type. Note that this will blank out the start and end dates as these are not applicable here.
9. Set the minimum score. This will only affect the message that students receive in their feedback and the colour of their score (green or red).
10. Give the exam a unique name, enter the instructions and click on 'Set exam'.
11. The exam paper will automatically open ready to print. Here, you can choose to print or download as a PDF by selecting 'Destination' and 'Save as PDF'.
12. From the same assignment screen, you can also download the mark scheme by clicking on the printer symbol and selecting 'Print Mark Scheme'.
13. You can now choose to copy the exam paper for your students and have them complete it whenever you like.
